Steampunk Dress

Steampunk Dresses

Steampunk dresses are inspired from a fictional alternative history set in the Edwardian or Victoria period in England. As such, these dresses are based in the Victorian and gothic styles of fashion. Steampunk clothing is further identified by its intense use of custom details, such as an abundance of frills and lace on dresses, and eye-catching accessories (for women), such as elaborate handbags and parasols.

What is Steampunk?

First introduced in written works of fiction, and then depicted in anime, manga, TV and movies, steampunk is a revolution in fashion that bridges history with fantasy. Once, only featured as a micro-niche at obscure cosplay events in scattered sites around the globe, steampunk has begun to cross over into more mainstream culture. The decades of casual attire that allowed for a carefree and almost sloppy look, is now drawing to a close as trendsetters grab from the past, present and fictionalized future to reinvent and remix the latest trends in fashion. Steampunk embraces this movement with its focus on customization and personalization of fashion apparel.

Victorian Dresses

Steampunk dresses borrow heavily from the 19 th century Victorian period. A dress from this era may feature exquisite drapery, heavy corsetry, tailored form-fitting jackets and an assortment of features such as frills, pleats, ruffles, braids and fringing, lending the piece great feminine character. This style of dress allows the women to give her look a balance of empowerment and submissiveness, whilst catering to her particular style

Steampunk Fashion and Clothing

Steampunk clothing borrows from the various women's fashion movements of the 18th and 19th centuries, including Orientalism, Gothic, Scottish Highlands and Aestheticism. But what steampunk brings to this base is its own twisted take on Victorian Haute Couture. Steampunk clothing is often modified with industrial, tattered and distorted elements, which makes the costume slightly alien to actual history. Goth, punk and Lolita 'cosplay' influences are abundant in steampunk fashion, and a dress from this genre usually features some of these tweaks to varying degrees.
